Ski conditions in the Tetons just keep getting better. The base is
in and it's solid. All of the lower exits now have sufficient coverage,
and even the tree skiing is good.
We keep getting storm cycles that leave a lot of snow, but not so
much that it makes the skiing dangerous. For example, this week Targhee
has reported 9", 6", 4", 3", and 9". That doesn't sound like a lot of
snow, but when you add it up, you get 31 inches of snow. As far as I'm
concerned, that is dust-on-crust at Grand Targhee, but in the
backcountry, where you can easily find untracked snow, it means
heavenly, safe, bottomless powder.
On Monday night, a friend from Jackson called and said, "Glory at
6:15am. You interested?" Normally, I'm an early riser, but I like to
have my coffee and read or work a little and enjoy the caffeine buzz. But
it IS glorious to stand on top of Mount Glory at dawn.
I met Gary at the Pass parking lot at 6:15. There were already 4
other cars parked there. Not quite first chair on Glory, but close
enough. Definitely the first wave. We climbed up Glory in the dark, with
headlamps. It was actually quite pleasant climbing up in the dark, the
lights of Jackson off to the east, a feint light growing on the eastern
horizon, especially since there was absolutely NO wind. We skied Glory
Bowl. Even though there was only 3-4 inches of new snow, all of the
tracks on Glory Bowl were almost covered and the snow was soft and
slow.
