Teton Conditions: 02/14/07 |
|
It's been a feast and famine season in the Tetons, with both weighing in equally. If you can get out WHENEVER the conditions are good, then you've probably had a pretty good season. But as everyone is saying, "It's not last year." The current conditions are really good. - Friday, February 9 - This latest storm cycle started on Thursday, 02/08 when the west side of the Tetons received 5 inches of new snow. Went to Mail Cabin Creek . The 5 inches, reported at Targhee, skied like 8-10 of light-density snow on top of a firm melt crust. NICE dust on NICE crust. On a scale of 10, I'd give it a 6, but after a week of meltdown slush conditions, a 6 was appreciated by all.
Lone Pine, Mail Cabin Creek - Saturday, February 10 - Cold snow fell overnight even though it was raining in Driggs, ID most of Friday. Went to Berds. I was the first one. Major woomphing/settling all the way up. I almost turned around but decided to continue because the uptrack is on a 25 degree slope that gets skied a lot. The snow was wind affected and did not look good for skiing. I made a long traverse across upper slopes and continued to hear woomphing. I decided to go get the hell out. Peeled and skied down. To my surprise, the snow was great. So good, I decided to ski another lap. By that time, a large party from the yurt had skied the 25 degree slope. I skied 4 laps and until the last lap, the snow was good. But on the fourth lap, around 3:30pm, the snow was getting heavy and wet. The meltdown had returned, but not before I got in a great day.
Berds Mountain - Sunday, February 11 - Meltdown returns. Almost raining on Teton Pass with 37 degree temps at 1:30pm. Work day.
- Monday, February 12: Targhee day. 8" in 24, 20" from this storm cycle. Great, deep, dense, slightly wind-affected pow. More like 10-15" in favored spots.
Windy Ridge, Mail Cabin Creek - Tuesday, February 13: Targhee reported 8" again, 6" after the lifts closed. But it was a big lie. Maybe their SNOWTEL equipment smoked one bowl too many. They got about 2 inches after the lifts closed. I returned to Mail Cabin Creek and skied, north, south, and northeast faces and all were good. The south-facing slopes had 8 inches of light powder on a very hard crust. The north and northeast facing slopes had about 12 inches of powder on top of a soft, consistent base.
